May 31st, 2010, 11:30 AM Posted by: Nikki Benson Photo by: Nikki Benson There were strange things going on with the sound at Big Foot stage, and The xx were off to a late start. This worked to the band’s advantage because the mass of people grew and they were very eager to get the party started. When Romy Madley Croft, Oliver Sim, and Jamie Smith came out, the crowd went wild. Trying to keep her stage domineer, Romy Madley Croft hid the smile that was peeking out through her lips, kept her eyes down, and headed towards her microphone. The sound of The xx is very subtle and dark. From one song to the next, light drum machine taps and one strum guitar licks drifted atop the audience’s heads–it’s very simple and airy. One might wonder why and or how people can get so deeply into music that consistently floats above the surface of intensity. The answer is that their surface is intense, and ultimately very sexy. Also, The xx were a highly anticipated act. As such, most of the audience knew all the nooks and crannies of each song. With each pop of the drum machine, members of the audience swayed, danced, celebrated that they were in good company. The xx have their dark, sexy, melodic, all-in-black shtick going on, and this show would have been better served in a room that forwarded the ambiance. However, their fans were so eager to see them, I don’t think they minded the out-door, middle of the afternoon show. There are rumors that The xx will be playing Seattle this fall, but SSG hasn’t been cleared to release any details as of yet–stay tuned! The recognizable department store window displays should not be undermined, sometimes for the creators it can take anything from a month to a year from concept to realization. Often containing art, film, fashion, light and even sound installations, to capture the attention of passers by. Selfridges has always had a strong reputation for elaborate creative displays and spare no time and effort keeping them fresh and innovative. Monday 10th May 2010 saw the launch of Selfridges collaborating with 10 current prominent musicians/artists to create ‘Sound Of The Mind’. This felt more like a free public art exhibition than a window display featuring artists Paloma Faith, Florence and the Machine, Dizzee Rascal, The XX, The Drums and Charlotte Gainsbourg conveying stunning visuals to accompany their lyrics. Having viewed a few of the initial sketches before seeing them in the windows they are extremely close to the original ideas and all feature a sense of the artist’s own touch, it’s easy to glide past and tell who’s window belongs to who. Ranging from ‘The XX’s familiar and effective large neon light X to Charlotte’s Gainsbourg more understated visual bath time which presented female clothes draped on a chair. Of course fashion was not ignored with the Florence and the machine window’s mannequin dress in Temperley and Alexander McQueen. Needless to say the display is entrancing; managing to keep a story and theme with all the windows adhering to lyrics and a musician but individual character traits upon the particular artist. Selfridges is also holding a ‘guess the song competition’…
The principal is simple: guess the title of the songs depicted across the seven windows of the London store down Duke Street side and four windows of the Manchester Exchange Square store. These windows are not part of the special artists collaborations but have been created by the Selfridges windows creative team. Guess each song correctly and enter the competition at selfridges.com/guessthesong for a chance to win £500 to spend in the store!

Full disclosure: I begged and annoyed and bled (okay not bled, but I would have) to cover this show more for the XX and not so much for Hot Chip. I’ve always thought Hot Chip was okay, but they never fully clicked for me. Meanwhile, the XX record proved to be one of those albums that I can hear umpteen times in a row and never tire of (I know this because my girlfriend has been obsessed with it since it came out and if I’m not sick of it now I never will be). Still, I’d heard so much about Hot Chip live that I was excited to give them a proper chance finally. But first, mmmm, the XX. Like their sound, the XX live is an example in restraint, simplicity, and space. The setup is straightforward and the plot is uncomplicated. One guitar, one bass, male and female vocal tradeoffs, and uncomplicated beats played live on multiple MPC drum machines (thanks to my homeboy Callan at 9:30 for confirming the gear). What makes it all special, though, is the timing. Every crisp note, every necessary snare hit, every softly honest line happens exactly when the song cries out for it. Every pause ends just before it’s gone on too long, right when the space is desperate to be filled. The songs themselves remained true to the record, and there was a slight “I’m listening to the album on a really huge and amazing sound system” feel. Normally, that can be a little boring, but with a record as perfect in its own way as the XX’s debut, I don’t think anyone minded. the rest of the article goes on about Hot Chip.
